Summit's Social Action Committee Service Is Our Prayer
Our Mission Statement
The mission of the Social Action Committee is to create, coordinate, and implement social justice activities both within the Summit community and the greater community at large; to educate and lead others in socially responsible behavior; and to model compassionate social responsibility to our children.
What do we do? Below are some recent and ongoing Summit Social Action activities. You may click on a topic for more information.
Crisis House: The mission of Crisis House is "to serve the community by providing socio-economically disadvantaged and homeless families and individuals the guidance and resources necessary to achieve self-sufficiency success." Every year, Summit provides Crisis House with hygiene packets for the homeless, dried and canned foods, baby items such as formula and diapers, household goods for domestic violence shelter, and Christmas gifts for our adopted family.
Interfaith Shelter Network: Each spring, Summit collaborates with two other congregations in their efforts to provide food and chaperones for the homeless as part of the Interfaith Shelter Network.
Esperanza Colegio of Tijuana: Summit provides support for a student at Esperanza, a school that provides an enriching education to children in a very poor area of Tijuana.
Empty Bowls: Empty Bowls is “a grassroots effort to raise money and awareness in an effort to end hunger and food insecurity.” Bowls are made by Summitarians or local ceramic artists and sold with an order of soup and bread to raise funds to support either Crisis House’s hunger program or the Santee Food Bank. See pictures at empty bowl pictures.
Pride Parade: Summitarians, along with members of other San Diego UU congregations, participate each July in the Pride Parade to show our support to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. See pictures at pride parade pictures.
What can you do?
Look for the "Social Action Corner" in the newsletter for ways you can participate in upcoming social action activities. Or even better, come to a Social Action Meeting! We would love to have you join us! We meet the third Sunday of the month at 8:30 a.m. before the service in the library.
